A bond is a debt instrument usually issued by a government or a company to raise money. The investor lends money to the issuer, usually for a predetermined period and at a fixed interest rate.  Throughout the life of the bond, the issuer will pay the investor periodic interest payments and on the maturity date, the principal will be repaid.
